The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Henry A. Dickinson (ASN: 37491074), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 15 February 1945. Upon hearing a report that infiltrating enemy were in the area, Private Dickinson’s platoon leader and two enlisted men went to investigate. After moving about one hundred fifty yards they contacted the Japanese, killing five enemy. However, they exhausted their ammunition in this action, and before they could reload, four additional enemy leaped from a hiding place. Private Dickinson, who had been left behind at the platoon command post as radio operator, heard the first shots, and immediately grabbing a Browning Automatic Rifle, rushed to the scene. He arrived just as the four remaining Japanese appeared, and seeing his comrades’ predicament, ran toward the enemy firing his rifle from the hip. Private Dickinson’s quick action killed three enemy, and surprised the fourth long enough so that another man could reload and kill him. Though he was slightly wounded by a grenade thrown by one of the Japanese, his courage in aggressively rushing the enemy saved his comrades from death or capture. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
