The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Roy L. Cottrell (ASN: 33733090), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 10 February 1945. During an attack on a strong enemy-held building, Private Cottrell and four companions managed to secure a foothold in a narrow tunnel on the ground floor. However, fire from the hostile strong point was so great that the group was commanded to withdraw in order that artillery fire could be placed on the position. Retreat to a covered position behind an adjacent wall entailed crossing a yard which was fully exposed to enemy observation and fire. Private Cottrell voluntarily offered to stay behind and cover the withdrawal of his comrades. Although his position offered no cover or concealment, he placed effective fire upon the Japanese in the building, allowing the other men to successfully dash across the only avenue of escape. Private Cottrell was the last man to leave the position, and as he ran across the yard he was fatally wounded by enemy rifle fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
