The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade [then Private First Class] Hamilton S. Cole (ASN: 36864227), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division. Private Cole, a Medical Aidman, left his covered position at Mount Pacawagan on 8 May 1945, and, under intense enemy artillery fire, went forward in order to administer first aid to a wounded man. Realizing that only immediate evacuation could save the casualty’s life, he placed the man on his shoulder and, in the absence of a stretcher, carried him for a distance of 75 yards over exposed terrain under enemy fire until he reached the aid station. Private Cole’s courageous action saved the life of his comrade. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
