Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 270 (August 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Austin K. Clayton (ASN: 34594233), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. On 1 February 1945, as Sergeant Clayton’s platoon neared the crest of “Top of the World” Hill, it was noted that an air strike was to be made dangerously close to their position. The platoon leader started toward the rear in an attempt to stop the strike, but was fatally wounded by enemy fire from only 50 yards away. Immediately Sergeant Clayton proceeded over the same fire-swept terrain, reached his company’s command post, reported the situation, and secured a delay in the air strike. In Manila on 14 February 1945, while acting as platoon leader in defending a newly won building, Sergeant Clayton so efficiently, courageously, and effectively led his men, although wounded himself, that the Japanese were unable to retake the building. His service was an outstanding example of combat efficiency and courageous devotion to duty. His gallantry in action and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
