The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Melvin C. Cantrell (ASN: 0414292), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Company, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. During the action near Sablan on 1 April 1945, Lieutenant Cantrell courageously braved enemy mortar and sniper fire in order to guide tanks along two miles of road sown with anti-tank mines. Although some of the mines were camouflaged, making it necessary to remove surrounding grass and soil to expose then to the view of tank drivers, Lieutenant Cantrell courageously accomplished his mission, and personally led the advance in front of our tanks. Later, during the advance on Baguio on 24 April 1945, he moved forward with only sparse cover to direct the withdrawal of tanks and infantry caught in an area of concentrated enemy fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
