The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Kenneth R. Cadwallader (ASN: 37146009), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 30 January 1945. Sergeant Cadwallader, a machine gun section leader, risked his life to run 40 yards over open, bullet-swept terrain to rescue a wounded comrade. Driven from his firing position by enemy fire, Sergeant Cadwallader saw one of his squad members lying helplessly wounded in an exposed position. Disregarding the intense hostile fire, Sergeant Cadwallader ran forward, picked up the injured man, and carried him to a position of partial cover where immediate first aid saved the casualty from bleeding to death. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
