The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank J. Boeving (ASN: 37134788), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 30 January 1945. When Japanese tanks attacked American positions, Private Boeving was forced to take cover in a foxhole to escape the intense enemy fire. There he learned that a radio in another dugout in the area could be used to bring friendly artillery fire on the hostile tanks and infantry. Private Boeving immediately left his sheltered position and courageously crossed a fifty-yard fire-swept open area three times in order to carry the radio, piece by piece, back to his original position, where a radio operator assembled the set and quickly secured artillery fire which greatly assisted in repelling the enemy counterattack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
