The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert W. Soule (ASN: 31340861), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 274th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Infantry Division, in action on 4 January 1945 in the vicinity of Mande-St.-Etienne, Belgium. During an engagement with the enemy, Private First Class Soule operated a radio from an observation post exposed to intense fire of various calibers. Though wounded by a nearby shell burst, he declined evacuation, remained at his post and continued to transmit fire commands. His gallant act facilitated the accurate artillery fire upon the foe and was in accordance with high military tradition.
