The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Stanley W. Nieminski (ASN: 36688191), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Battalion, 79th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy 6 October 1944, near Grandvillers, France. When the enemy launched a strong counterstrike supported by automatic weapons in an effort to force a breakthrough. Though the gunner and squad leader was killed, Private First Class Nieminski immediately took over the firing of the gun.
Although other heavy weapons squads were falling back to more favorable positions, Private First Class Nieminski, realizing that he was in a position to provide covering fire for the withdrawal of the troops, decided to hold the position in in spite of the fact that the enemy was less than 100 yards away and pouring fire on his position.
Maintaining a steady and accurate fire, he silenced the enemy machine guns, killed or wounded their crews and accounted for a large number of the advancing infantry men. He continued his fire until his gun was knocked out of action by small arms fire. Private First Class Neimenski’s courage and devotion to duty materially, aided in repulsing the counterattack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Nieminski, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
