Headquarters, 45th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 52 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John J. H. Miller, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France in 1944. Private First Class Miller was a member of a company that was subject to heavy artillery fire preceding an enemy counterattack. The enemy attack caused confusion among our troops and they began to withdraw. At this vital time Private First Class Miller moved to position which afforded a good field of fire. Here he succeeded in holding back the German advance until his comrades could affect an orderly withdrawal. Private First Class Miller suffered wounds but undoubtedly saved many lives. His company was able to reorganize quickly and repel the counterattack. Private First Class Miller’s courage and aggressiveness under fire are worthy of the highest standards of military service.
