Andrew Goodpaster attended McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois, for two years before transferring to West Point, where he graduated second in his class in 1939. In the late 1940's, he studied at Princeton University, earning a master's in engineering and a doctorate in international relations. He came out of retirement to become West Point's superintendent, the academy was reeling from a cheating scandal that involved 151 cadets.

Lieutenant Colonel Goodpaster's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
