Awarded for actions during the Peace Time Awards

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman's Medal to Staff Sergeant Patrick M. Malone, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Akutan Island, Alaska, in the Aleutian Chain on 31 July 1989. On that date, Sergeant Malone rescued an individual from the freezing waters of the North Pacific. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Malone unhesitatingly jumped into fifteen foot seas to assist an individual who had fallen overboard. Despite the hazard of possibly being crushed between two large vessels or being sucked under the hull of one of the vessels, he succeeded in moving the victim to safety. After the victim was successfully recovered, Sergeant Malone administered medical treatment for hypothermia and abrasions. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Malone has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
