The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman's Medal to Staff Sergeant David J. Biddinger, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life in Albuquerque, New Mexico on 7 July 2003. On that date, Sergeant Biddinger rushed to the aid of a wounded Albuquerque Police Officer. Albuquerque Police Detective Sergeant Carol Oleksak had been shot twice and was on the ground critically wounded. Despite the presence of the armed man who continued to brandish the weapon and with complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Biddinger unselfishly approached the crime scene to administer aid to Sergeant Oleksak who was unconscious due to her wounds. Sergeant Biddinger unhesitatingly applied life-saving techniques learned as a Pararescue Specialist. His application of first aid undoubtedly saved Sergeant Oleksak's life, and contributed greatly to her swift recovery. His actions also allowed the other on-scene police officers to concentrate on the armed assailant thus preventing possible harm to bystanders. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Biddinger reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
