Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Stanley G. Maratos, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-130E Pilot at An Hoa Marine Base, Republic of Vietnam, on 19 January 1969. On that date, Major Maratos and his crew performed an emergency airlift of ammunition to reinforce beleaguered United States Marines defending An Hoa from attack. In spite of the hazards of hostile rockets, mortars, ground fire and heavy rains Major Maratos with outstanding skill and determination successfully delivered this critically needed cargo and took off while the field was under massive attack. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Maratos reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
