(Citation Needed) - SYNOPSIS: Staff Sergeant Shawn M. Martin, United States Marine Corps, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life while serving as a Marine Combat Instructor at Camp Pendleton, California, on 12 September 2008. On that date while instructing in grenade use, a student threw a live grenade that failed to clear the wall and fell back into the pit. Staff Sergeant Martin saw the student freeze and grabbed him by the vest, forcing him out of the pit and over the low wall and then covered him with his own body as the grenade detonated.
