Awarded for actions during the Gulf War

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" to Staff Sergeant Mark Fariello, United States Army, for exceptional heroism during Operation DESERT STORM on 26 and 27 February 1991, while serving as a Scout Section Sergeant, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 3d Armored Division. Without regard for his personal safety, Staff Sergeant Fariello led his section under fire by the enemy forces to identify their disposition which enabled the 2d Brigade to deploy and destroy all enemy forces in the sector. His section moved forward of the Battalion Task Force, which was the lead Task Force, 3d Armored Division with no friendly forces in front of him for fifty kilometers. Staff Sergeant Fariello's actions reflect distinct credit upon him, the 3d Armored Division and the United States Army.
