Awarded for actions during the Civil War

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Charles Bieger, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 22 February 1864, while serving with Company D, 4th Missouri Cavalry, in action at Ivy Farm, Mississippi. Private Bieger voluntarily risked his life by taking a horse, under heavy fire, beyond the line of battle for the rescue of his captain, whose horse had been killed in a charge and who was surrounded by the enemy's skirmishers.
