Benjamin Engel and twin brother Arthur Engel graduated together from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, Class of 1938. Arthur Engel retired as a Coast Guard Rear Admiral, and Benjamin Engel retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Vice Admiral in 1974.
