Joe Campa enlisted in the Navy in 1980. He is a distinguished honor graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy and also graduated from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy in May 2003. In March 2006, prior to being appointed the eleven MCPON, he graduated from the Naval War College with a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

Campa, Jr., United States Navy, was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy from 20 July 2006 to 12 December 2008.
