Awarded for actions during the Civil War

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Radioman Third Class Lawrence R. Blankenship (NSN: 7242592), United States Naval Reserve, for a voluntary act of heroism over and beyond the normal call of duty and in the face of considerable danger to himself on 8 November 1945. By his conduct he is credited with having saved the life of Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Joe Trizza after both he and Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Trizza had been injured in a plane collision over Corpus Christi Bay, Texas, and were struggling for survival in the water. With outstanding resourcefulness and selfless lack of consideration for his own injuries, Aviation Radioman Third Class Blankenship exhibited that courage and devotion to others which is in accord with the highest Naval traditions.
