Awarded for actions during the Global War on Terror

(Citation Needed) - SYNOPSIS: Specialist Carl L. Shealy, Jr., United States Army, was awarded the Soldier's Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Troop E, 2d Squadron, 3d Armored Cavalry regiment, while serving in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in Iraq. On 21 November 2009 near Abu Sayf, Iraq, Sergeant Jeffrey Boothe and Specialist Carl L. Shealy, Jr., dove into the river in an attempted to save Sergeant First Class Miguel Wilson who was trying to rescue Staff Sergeant John McGuire during a river crossing. Sergeant First Class Wilson became submerged from the weight of his gear and drowned, but Sergeant Shealy was able to push Sergeant McGuire to safety where Sergeant Boothe pulled him out of the water. Both soldiers then, without thought for their own safety, dove into the river in a valiant but futile effort to save the life of Sergeant First Class Wilson.
