Bowe Bergdahl was held as a Prisoner of War for nearly five years after he deserted his post in Afghanistan, and was the longest-held Prisoner of War in the Wars on Terrorism. Ultimately he plead guilty to deserting his post in the events that led to his capture and was dishonorably discharged.

Private First Class Bowe Robert Bergdahl, United States Army, was captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan on 30 June 2009 and was held as a Prisoner of War until his release in May 2014. [Having been captured after deserting his post, the nature of his conduct and captivity would not qualify him for the Prisoner of War Medal.]
