The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Valeryan J. When his platoon was completely surrounded by the enemy, and although already twice wounded, Corporal Brodnicki volunteered to carry a message through the enemy's lines to the nearest American troops at Novo-Nezhino, six miles away.
