Awarded for actions during the Civil War

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal Isaac Gause, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 13 September 1864, while serving with Company E, 2d Ohio Cavalry, in action at Berryville, Virginia, for capture of the colors of the 8th South Carolina Infantry while engaged in a reconnaissance along the Berryville and Winchester Pike.
